Week 4. Night time on the quays

The other week I spent a couple of hours on the quays and I felt that I didn't do it justice, and so as you can see I went back! Unfortunately this time the wind was howling down the ship canal, as your probably aware on Monday evening 24th we were having really high winds. Trust me to go out that night.
Although I'm sure that I'll spend many more hours there in the near future trying to just capture that shot.

The shot with the Train wheels, I used a hand held flash gun that wasn't meant for my camera at all, I set it to manual and fired it at one eighth power and fired my camera at eight seconds. I was pleased at the results, especially as it was just trial and error.
Most of the shots that I took I did quite a lot of work on in Photoshop Elements. The buildings were lob sided and so I had to straighten them with correct camera distortion. And then I felt that some of them needed darkening with Adjust Lighting/Levels, as wall as using other tools such as Clone Stamp, Cut and Paste, Layers as well as other bits and pieces. All of the following shots were taken using a tripod with my camera bag strapped on to help weigh it down.

Week 3

This week we were asked to go out and get some landscape shots.

Well after sitting by the side of the Manchester Ship canal for two and a half hours. The following shots were the best that I could come up with, especially as I left my tripod at home ( excuse ). I got to the Quays at about three thirty and spent most of my time just watching the light change and the clouds roll in, it was really quite dramatic. I made the decision a few Weeks ago to keep my camera settings on manual mode rather than using the other settings and making it easier for myself.

GOLDEN OLDIES

EASTMAN KODAK
No 3 Eastman plate camera

I inherited this magnificent piece of engineering some years ago. I decided to take a shot of it using a sheet of wrapping paper for the background. Using the camera's flash to highlight the hologram effect in the paper.

THE GOLDEN GIRLS

STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM

This shot was taken during the summer, whilst the girls had a picnic in the garden.
I had seen this mixture of black and white and colour in a magazine, and so I thought I'd give it a go.

Struggling

Hi all,
I'm really struggling with this with this blogging business.

            Regards Pete

Grand Daughter

Abbi

This portrait was taken by the window with a reflector that I bought on e-bay. There was no other form of light used other than that entering the window. This was just a lucky shot as I'd only ever seen this type of photo in magazines. What I did was to take my camera right up close to the lightest part on Abbi's face  and take a reading of the camera  and then to stand back and recompose my shot as well as to use the original readings. The background was just just a cheap black throw.

This shot was taken using the same procedure as the previous one.

NOT A WINTER PANSY

Ornamental flower

This shot was taken so that I could emphasize the flower by blurring the background. The way I did this was to use my Canon 450D with a 50mm F1.8 lens.
Taken at :
1/200th sec
F1.8
ISO 200
Although if I Had taken the same shot at F20 with a much faster shutter speed and the same ISO, then I would have achieved both the foreground as well as the background in focus giving me a greater depth of field.

Controlled Blur 3

In this shot I was trying to control the depth of field by keeping all of the balls in focus as well as the background.

Raw Format converted to Jpeg
Aperture priority, 1/800 sec, F 20, ISO 200, focal length 50mm,  Lens 50mm 1,8

In this shot I was trying to control the depth of field by keeping the first two balls (the nearest to you)
in focus and sending the other ball and the background out of focus.

As you can imagine I have added the moon in with Photoshop Elements. The shot of the moon I took earlier this year
